Health and Wellbeing at Work Conference


Veronica Ball, WorkFit, will present: Barriers & Facilitators for a timely return to work from a Bio-psychosocial aspect.

This session will identify the issues raised by ill health at work and the effects of long-term sickness/absence. Common barriers to function will be explored including pain and movement.

Solutions will be identified to facilitate a return to work. The environment and social context which play a significant part in enabling or preventing individuals a safe and timely return to work. Case studies will support the theory and illustrate real stories from the work place.

The session will be supported by evidence from Waddell et al (2006) Vocational Rehabilitation: What works for whom and when. And the importance of good health in the work place as identified by Dame Carol Black (2008) Improving Health and work: changing lives which highlighted the need for prevention of work-related illness and injury, and the use of the workplace as an opportunity for general health improvement.

Learning outcomes :

  • Understanding the complexities of common & long term conditions in the work place.

  • Exploring fear-avoidance and the barriers of function and the psychological impact.

  • Identifying what environmental & social aspects impact upon an individual.

  • Reviewing outcome measures to identify barriers & facilitate change.

  • Exploring solutions to facilitate individuals back into the work place.
